Interventions #12: Brian Moran & Matt Hannafin - Shunyata: The third duo recording by Moran (electronics, circuit-bent and otherwise) and Hannafin (percussion), this is their first experiment in working outdoors, in a backyard in Brooklyn, creating a sound-envelope that alternately incorporates, interacts with, surrounds, silences, or acquiesces to the neighborhood's ambient sounds -- air conditioners, children's voices, neighbors' barbecues, barking dogs, etc. Total time: 41:41.

Interventions #14: Jeffrey Lependorf - New Bamboo: Silo Solos: For this recording, Lependorf took his shakuhachi (traditional Japanese bamboo flute) into two different empty silos located at the Art Omi International Arts Center in Ghent, NY, where he directs the Music Omi International Music Residency Program. There, he improvised along with the birds, insects, airplanes, and passing cars amplified by the silos. The silos themselves become partners in these introspective tracks, a few of which combine multiple improvisations into a single piece. Total time: 54:56.
Interventions #15: Tomchess & Kanaiwa Takuma - Becoming an Appearance: Simultaneously meditative and exploratory duo improvisations from Tomchess (ney flutes, voice) and Kanaiwa Takuma (electric guitar, voice). Inspiration was drawn from Tibetan Buddhist tantric texts/practices of the Naropa lineage, the Persian poet Hafiz, and the feelings, moods, and crossed dialogues of electric/electronic and wind/breath instruments, with their resulting melodic and textural harmonics. Track 2 is a straight duo improv. On tracks 1 and 3 the artists overdubbed a second improvisation atop the first, with both adding percussion and electronics. Total time: 33:34.

Interventions #16: Chris Welcome, Motoko Shimizu, Han Degc, Matt Hannafin - ABC No Rio, 8-21-05: Live improvisations from Welcome (hollow-body electric guitar), Shimizu (voice, toys, percussion), Degc (prepared alto sax), and Hannafin (percussion, rudimentary electronics). One of those moments when something completely unexpected arises from the combination of disparate improvisational personalities. Built from a dialogue of small, well-placed sounds, it's music with a wonderfully natural yet classically avant feel, like a country garden as landscaped by Merce Cunningham and John Cage. Total time: 29:09.

Interventions #17: Robert Gellman - Debut: A recording of electric guitarist Robert Gellman's first-ever live solo performance, recorded at the C.O.M.A. Series, ABC No Rio, New York City, on August 21, 2005. Self-taught on his instrument, Gellman conjures a sound in which angular, percussive note clusters dance atop a slowly shifting drone. Bluesy, snaky, sneaky, and spacious. A distinctive improvisational voice. Total time: 23:12. to purchase go to: www.downtownmusicgallery.com and use the search function to find and order this disk.
Interventions #18: Greg Burrows - Estonia: An "authorized bootleg" of a solo concert by percussionist, singer, and educator Greg Burrows, recorded in September 2005 during a weekend rhythm workshop at Polli Talu Arts Center in Vatla, Estonia. The concert capped a full day of Taketina, a pathway to rhythm that uses the body and voice to explore both simple and complex rhythms in a guided group context. Includes compositions and improvisations using bones, riq, bugarabu, body percussion, voice, pandeiro, berimbau, animal calls, cowbell, bamboo wind chimes, nails, and caxixi. Total time: 35:44.

Interventions #19: Barry Chabala - Acoustic Guitar: Four improvisations from guitarist Barry Chabala, who says: "Acoustic Guitar is my first solo recording, and a document of my frame of mind at the time. Tracks 'DB1' and 'DB2' are tributes to Derek Bailey, a major influence on my work. I hope that I've been able to take bits of his language and extend/blend them with my own voice. The track 'M' was originally recorded for use as source material for another project, but I think it really stands on its own. 'from guitar' takes 'M' and deconstructs it with granular software, an experiment from a period when I thought myself a laptop artist -- which I'm not." Total time: 35:04.
Interventions #20: Greenstreet - Altijd: Featuring Wil Greenstreet (alto and soprano sax, recorder, percussion), Cat Greenstreet (electric bass, percussion), and Morgan Greenstreet (drums & percussion). Wil says, "Greenstreet is a family trio with Wil on alto sax, Cat on electric bass, and Morgan on drums, playing in the zone, making music, new every time, inspired by Miles, late Coltrane, Wayne, Bartok, and Medeski, Martin, and Wood. Wil was formerly Billy Green, famous rock guitar player in Australia, until he moved to the States in 1975 for the jazz and took up saxophone. Cat's first love is funk. Morgan is 18, loves Tony and Elvin, and studies with Billy Martin. Enjoy!" Total time: 54:49.
